Oak Road

Oak Road

This weekend retreat includes a main house, a guesthouse, and a pool and cabana. As the complex is a place for both getaways and get-togethers, we sited the structures carefully, mindful of balancing the needs for privacy and community. Mixing materials, forms, and scales gives the property a casual atmosphere, as if it were constructed over a period of time. The main house, clad in horizontal metal siding and topped with a low-slung, hipped roof, contrasts with the two-story stone guest cottage, with its steeply pitched, gable roof. The relationship between the buildings and the land was also important; we structured the outdoor space as well as architectural space. To enhance the sense of place, only the grounds enclosed by the buildings were formally landscaped; the surrounding countryside was left in its wild state.
