Sycamore Crossing

Sycamore Crossing

Intended as a weekend home with future plans for extended stays, the house is designed to feel relaxed and at ease in the landscape. The design began with selecting the site: on the top of a knoll within the heavily wooded acreage to maximize and frame views. Because the property was undeveloped, a road could be cut in to maximize the sense of seclusion and privacy. The home’s spatial organization addresses separation of uses—the main living spaces in the center of the house are separated from the master wing by a screened porch on the north and from a guest wing by another screened porch on the south. The screened porches are oriented to funnel the prevailing southeast breezes through the house. To reinforce the connection to the land, the design employs earth-toned stone, shingle siding, and galvanized roofing. Exposed interlocking beams in the living and dining areas evoke simple structures traditional to the rural area.
