This renovation and addition responds to its context of a neighborhood of 1960s vintage single-story ranch houses that is being transformed by new two-story homes. The scale of the house blends with both the original and new neighbors and accommodates a more open plan the owners wanted, suiting their modern lifestyle with three children at home. The renovation and addition stay within the language of the existing house, especially on the exterior, and create a relaxed, unpretentious, and comfortable atmosphere. The new expanded kitchen fits within the existing envelope, but is completely updated and open to adjacent family spaces. The master bath uses a simple color palette of whites and greens to create a sophisticated and understated space that evokes its history while enjoying modern amenities and comforts. This project captures the unique feeling of an established, lived-in home and expands that sensation into a renovation that is integrated seamlessly with the existing building.
