Omar Residence

Omar Residence

This simple, understated contemporary cottage with exceptional detailing sits tucked quietly amongst the bungalows in the Houston Heights. Although highly restrained, the house expresses an exuberance of spirit as it recombines common design elements of its more traditional neighbors. Exposed rafters, contrasting trim, and carefully scaled windows reinterpret the bungalow vernacular, creating a clean, modern, and unobtrusive presence. The new design respects the scale of the neighborhood by breaking the façade into two brick volumes connected by a recessed entry space. The rhythmic pattern of solids and voids echoes the existing context and dominant pattern along the street. Large windows bathe the entry in natural light and create a gallery space for art. As the house retreats on the lot, it forms an L-shape that embraces a backyard pool and patio, creating indoor/outdoor connections while maintaining a sense of privacy in this dense neighborhood.
